ABSTRACT
This chapter constructs a cypherpunk philosophy of technology and uses it to analyze cryptographic technology. While one half of this philosophy of technology focuses on the technical aspect of crypto, the other half draws upon Ivan Illich’s theory of tools to argue that cypherpunks view crypto as a convivial tool. Examples include simple substitution ciphers and public key encryption.
