ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the meta-ethical aspects of cypherpunk philosophy. Drawing a distinction between Timothy May’s crypto anarchy and Julian Assange’s crypto justice, it argues that there are multiple versions of cypherpunk meta-ethics. May’s crypto anarchy draws upon David Friedman’s anarcho-capitalism and uses the language of libertarianism and utilitarianism. Assange’s crypto justice offers a romantic theory of human nature and a virtue ethics conception of human character, and these insights are elucidated through reference to Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Aristotle.
