ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the central point of agreement between cypherpunks and hackers: that information should be free. Because the cypherpunks call for the privacy of personal information, they oppose censorship and advocate the free circulation of all public information. Cypherpunks also oppose “intellectual property” restrictions, such as copyright and patent, because they censor information and require surveillance. As an alternative, cypherpunks support the free and open source software movement and the open access movement.
