ABSTRACT

This chapter sets out the foundational ideas about race and racism in Poland and relates them to the global manifestations. Focusing on race and racism in the country, the chapter shows a shift in global racial discourse – an understanding of the specificity of Polish racism that can transform and add to our understandings of race and racism in the West. In doing so, it offers a brief theoretical and historical context while outlining the ways in which race has been framed in Poland. To do this effectively, this chapter highlights the methodological implications of doing black/mixed-race research in Poland and the way the entire book is structured.
