ABSTRACT

As You Like It and Henry VI, Part 1 both address the subject of religion and both were unregistered and unpublished for over twenty years. In Part 1, Henry VI, the Bishop of Winchester is under attack from hypocrisy and corruption, much as was the contemporary Bishop of Winchester, Thomas Cooper in 1589 in the pamphlets, Hay Any Work For Cooper and More Work for Cooper by Martin Mar-prelate. Indeed, one such pamphlet is a stage prop in Act 3. The Mar-prelate pamphlet war involved the Prelates and the Mar-prelates accusing each other of being Mar-prince, Mar-state, Mar-law, Mar-magistrate, and Mar-commonwealth. Vicar Mar-text in As You Like It is a direct entrance into this debate. More evidence is provided for Marlowe and his patron being involved in Martin Marprelate.
