ABSTRACT

The Conclusion reflects, by way of a synoptic summary, on the course of the argument given in the book. The Retrospect presents a succinct summary of each of the chapters and ties their results back to the initial question of how Sellars understands the concept of intentionality. It retraces Sellars' strategy for addressing this problem and how it required him to defend his position on issues in the philosophy of mind, in category theory, in the philosophy of language, and in what some call the metaphysics of epistemology. With regard to the particular claims defended and especially with regard to how they are argued, the Conclusion underlines that Sellars does not follow one single methodology but subsumes various methods within the overarching frame of a transcendental analysis. Finally, the Outlook ventures a survey of further desiderata for Sellars scholarship, which the investigation has brought to light, and shows why they make promising topics for future investigations.
