ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a summary of four UK-based case studies that have applied the Deep Place method outlined in Chapter 7. These case studies include four communities located in South and West Wales: Tredegar, Pontypool, Lansbury Park, and Llandovery. Undertaken between 2014 and 2019, these studies demonstrate the versatility of the Deep Place approach across a range of community types. This chapter outlines the regional and national context in Wales and then offers an honest appraisal of the challenges and opportunities embedded within each community. Despite each community facing its own range of challenges, this chapter nevertheless suggests that each has within it sufficient human and natural assets to achieve a sustainable and more equitable future. It concludes, however, that a radically new and sustainable approach is needed to realise these futures.
