ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the method of undertaking place-based analysis and planning advocated in this book. It outlines Deep Place, which is grounded in an empirical concern with how to achieve more economically, socially, environmentally, and culturally sustainable places and communities. It explains that the approach is based on the premise that a properly functioning economy should add to, rather than undermine, the social, environmental, and cultural sustainability of places and communities. Deep Place, it states, is an analysis and planning method that can be used to promote new patterns of social and economic sustainability. It suggests that the method seeks to restore meaningful economic activity by tackling the core issue of climate change and environmental protection.
