ABSTRACT

In this session, the clinician welcomes parents and orients them to the goals of Parental Friendship Coaching (PFC). This is also a time for the clinician to get to know more about families’ individual needs. Skills in this session focus on helping the parents to understand more about their child’s social behaviors and the antecedents and consequences in the current environment that may be shaping these behaviors. This information will help parents learn to modify these contingencies to change child behaviors. Finally, the tool of Special Time is introduced to foster a positive parent–child relationship, which is a foundation that will help children be more receptive to parental guidance.
