ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a summary of contemporary art in China during 2009, highlighting the artistic asset of the Artwork not to be dictated by its market price and exposing the downside of market speculation. It also clarifies the key criteria applied in compiling the Annual of Contemporary Art in China, i.e. whether the Artist has addressed “real” issues, whether the Artist has created superb works in most suitable, original, and effective ways, whether the Artist has tackled social issues that really matter, regardless of the approach he applies, and whether an already-famous artist has made new contribution.
