ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of contemporary art in China during 2013, with the booming of the art market being a highlight. First, art fairs are growing in size and become more influential as well. Second, young artists have gained a higher profile and the art circle started to put more weight on training young curators, whereas young artists’ creativity is overshadowed by a medley of commercial extravaganzas. Third, art foundations are emerging in horde, and the auction trade often takes recourse to hoax and treachery to allure buyers. All in all, the chapter discusses over-marketization as a factor of affecting the makeup and significance of contemporary art in China, either positively or negatively.
