ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the differences between disability and impairment, touches on the social, medical, and rehabilitative models of disability, and elucidates the valuable distinction between ableism and disablism. We provide a brief overview of the history of disability studies and the Disability Rights Movement, focusing on legislative developments in Europe and the United States, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990) and the United Nations Congress on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2006). Finally, we contextualize these concepts within a pedagogical framework, focusing on multifaceted manifestations of accessibility and how these can be implemented to make the music history classroom as inclusive as possible.
