ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we explore the theories that inform our thinking as we develop our novel concept of ‘Dislocated Complexity’ which is characterised by chronic crises and disruption. Theories explored include Complexity Theory, Giddens’ Theory of Structuration and Ling's Domains Approach. We discuss the impenetrable problems and unknowable unknowns of times of Dislocated Complexity and introduce the concept of ‘Unscripted Agency’, where action must be taken as a means to ensure that we have the ability to go on and to continue to function, but there is no tradition or convention on which to draw.
