ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we explore the implications of Dislocated Complexity for the University Workforce. In periods of Dislocated Complexity, the world of work is a subset of a world of unremitting and unfamiliar change along with chronic disruptions and crises of varying kinds; thus, the world of work in universities is experiencing dramatic change. The concept of human agency is central, especially in view of new forms of employment and the variety and diversity of ways in which staff engage in their work. We coined the concept of ‘Unscripted Agency’ which implies that there is no script or rule book or precedent on which to draw, nor is there any scripted or predictable outcome, and we discuss this as it applies to the university workforce in Dislocated Complexity.
