ABSTRACT

Chapter 9 begins by unpacking the parallels activist Bryan Stevenson draws between the COVID-19 virus (and thus capacities for developing a vaccine) and societal racism in America and then challenges us to diagnose musical racism as a path for inoculating our own profession from racism's harms. By delineating a taxonomy of musical racism, we can then situate each within a multi-tiered structure. A surface tier consists of familiar manifestations, including admissions, curricular, programming and assessment racism. Three major categories of Primordial Musical Racism, each with several subsets, include less familiar but no less egregious forms of musical racism.
