ABSTRACT

K–12 music teacher education is in urgent need of a foundational overhaul. It, too, is a field in which some of the most leading-edge activism has long taken place. Predicated on an alliance between Music Education and jazz studies, this chapter proposes a three-stage framework that progressively harnesses the benefits of an Afro-Euro nexus, thus retaining a place for band, orchestra and choir—but now within a contemporary, creativity-driven paradigm that, with BAM foundations, is aligned with the Racial Justice/Artistic Justice imperative.
