ABSTRACT
This chapter demonstrates that there was an apparent gap between the critical discussion on the subject and actual appropriations of Greek tragedy. The discussion of heredity and evolution seemed to stay entirely within the realm of literary criticism, while most contemporary adaptations were centred around more traditional themes such as gender relations and femininity. Most modifications revolved around the introduction of so-called psychological explanations of motives, the influence of melodrama, and the elimination of divine intervention.
