ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the Picasso exhibition in detail and provides an insight into the process leading up to the first-ever museum retrospective of Picasso’s work, held in 1932 at the Kunsthaus in Zurich. Jung’s unusual behaviour prior to the publication of his controversial essay on Picasso and an explanation of why Jung may have engaged in such activities are also explored. Furthermore, the furore caused by Jung’s comments is discussed to reinforce the controversial nature of his claims. To conclude the chapter, Jung’s admission of the ‘great psychological problem’ modern art presented him with is highlighted. A problem that extended far beyond a mere disdain for Picasso’s art.
