ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at scientific research in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and presents an overview of the current state of research in the region. The chapter examines institutional research models in Arab countries, identifying differences between different types of research activities that reflect historical, mainly colonial, legacies. The chapter also presents successful institutional research models in the region and examines positive developments taking place in both Qatar and the UAE in alignment with the two countries’ economic, social, and human development plans. Focusing on the social, economic, and cultural impacts of research, this chapter concludes with a critical examination of the contemporary impact of Western influence, perceived by skeptics as a “colonial legacy.”
