ABSTRACT

The world of museums is one of change, much like every other aspect of society, reflecting what is happening in communities, both local and global. Evolving cultural values and beliefs slowly become part of a shared understanding within society. The twenty-first century is witnessing significant change in museums as they step into their role as social institutions with new passion and energy, in many cases rethinking the place of museums in society and the power of these institutions to make a difference in the world. Another element of change reflects the place of children in museums, particularly young children. Throughout the twentieth century, children have slowly gained ground as a museum audience, initially as part of school field trips and later in family groups enjoying discovery experiences offered by science and history museums. The chapter also presents an overview on the key concepts discussed in this book.
