ABSTRACT

Current environmental conditions are of global concern for many, including children. Through research, exhibition design, programs and lectures, museums are working to illuminate issues and encourage actions to address the challenges now and in the future. The target audience for many museums is often older students and adults, yet young children are also concerned, in some cases fearful, of what climate change means to their lives and to the environment. Through exhibitions and programs, museums can help children understand critical issues and think about how they might act responsibly as good stewards of the earth. A variety of international case studies from zoos and aquariums to art museums exemplify the role museums can play in supporting children as they encounter and contribute to changing environmental issues that are of concern to citizens around the world.
