ABSTRACT

Museums, libraries and schools share a commitment to education and a desire to contribute to a better society although different in their beliefs and methods of teaching and learning. Knowledge of these institutions and their concern for social issues opens discussions about the place of children in society. In the twenty-first century, interest in a social agenda has grown and can be seen in museums today with a new emphasis on social activism and a mission that seeks to impact society in a positive way. As this commitment to a social agenda gains acceptance within the museum community, it makes sense to think about and engage a diverse group of museum visitors, including representation from across generations. Children contribute a unique interest and perspective to discussions of social issues and deserve to be seen and heard as museums step into the future.
