ABSTRACT

In the twenty-first century, museums are expanding their role in society and are now more frequently drawn to social issues that have significant implications for their communities and beyond. In fact, it is not unusual for today's museums to use their platform to engage visitors in socially relevant stories, thinking about an object or a work of art as a catalyst or provocation for visitor engagement. As museum professionals consider younger audiences and how best to support them now and in the future, the idea of change emerges. American philosopher John Dewey recognized that change in society was the expectation, and therefore, the future is unknown, filled with unanticipated events and innovation. Through exhibitions, special programs and relationships with visitors, museums have the potential to serve as an inspiration for those entering their doors, opening minds to opportunities.
