ABSTRACT

Change is inevitable within society. It can be unexpected, such as a pandemic or a tsunami, or anticipated based on current conditions. Museums have an opportunity to support children as they experience or anticipate change, using exhibitions and programs to connect, reflect and at times respond to issues that arise. Diverse case studies showcase different approaches to engage children with critical issues, from the power of futures thinking to nurturing empathy for wildlife to create good stewards of the environment. Topics cross cultural boundaries, yet have relevance for all museums as illustrations of how museums can address difficult concepts related to change.
