ABSTRACT

This chapter concludes the overview of the findings gained from the empirical research from a theoretical perspective.

In this chapter, the findings of the research are considered from an organisational perspective in order to outline how the improvising teacher can be seen as a social construction. The school is viewed holistically as a complex ecology and this is considered from three viewpoints: structure, culture and power. Insights from the participants in the research demonstrate their understanding of these concepts. The chapter concludes with a description of the process by which the improvising teacher becomes an empowered professional. A three-phase model is used to describe this developmental process.
