ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the papers published by Prof. Julio Garganta, in which he reflects on the absence in the Olympic motto Citius, Altius, Fortius of a major component of team sports, particularly soccer: Intelligentia. In soccer, as stressed by Grehaigne (1991), the performance of its elements (players and teams) is closely related to the tactical and strategic aspects of the game, since they deal at every moment with the space, time, organization and information available in the match. Soccer is distinguished by the simultaneous existence of cooperation and opposition, which at every moment leads to a collective relational dynamic that compels players to make continuous judgements and decisions, being the players’ actions, reactions and interactions that built the singularity and diversity of the chain of events that culminates in the scoring in the opponent’s goal and the prevention of such in their own goal.
