ABSTRACT
The introduction introduces the idea of philosophy as a distinct field, and makes the distinction between questions and meta-questions in various areas of philosophy. Examples are given of paradigmatic philosophical questions that seem to resist any empirical answers. These examples are followed by a brief overview of some historically influential views about what makes a question metaphilosophical. The chapter concludes with a suggestion about how to proceed answering metaphilosophical questions without begging questions.
