ABSTRACT

When fully formed, monster metaphors maintain their dominance by actively seeking out then eradicating alternative perspectives. It is, therefore, very difficult for competing metaphors to find a place to shine. This chapter explores how the dominance of an established monster might be challenged and resisted through the use of counter-hegemonic strategies. One strategy involves a solitary figure standing up and challenging the might of a monster. While this approach is unlikely to unsettle a monster, it marks the spot for future resistance. A second strategy involves building up networks or communities of resistance that use their collective power to challenge monster dominance. A third strategy aims to link up multiple communities of resistance into the formation of a social movement. The chapter concludes by considering ways in which counter-rhetoric can be used to de-bolster monsters and re-language alternative perspectives.
