ABSTRACT

This chapter anticipates what it might be like to live in a world without monster metaphors, a pluralist world in which radically different understandings co-exist. On the basis that prevention is better than cure, it explores ways to impede moderately sized metaphors from turning into monsters and ways to promote environments in which multiple ways of knowing can thrive. The first step requires us to make a valued commitment to pluralism. The next step involves identifying indicators of emergent and budding monster metaphors. This is followed by strategies for harnessing the collective force of rulers, watchdogs, thinkers and communicators in intervening and blocking the emergence of monsters.
