ABSTRACT

While the other chapters have focussed on techniques and guidelines for interviewing practice, this chapter is an introduction to some of the underlying ethical, legal and safety issues you may encounter as a media practitioner. Of course in the space of one chapter, it is not possible to cover all the areas you are likely to encounter; it is an introduction to some of the main issues you may face when you first start interviewing. It is not aimed at investigative journalists and others with many years’ experience in the field of interviewing. This chapter uses current cases and examples to discuss media law and ethics and how these two areas frequently overlap, while providing sound advice for staying safe while interviewing.
