ABSTRACT

The questions you ask are the key to getting the best information for the best stories. Whether it’s for a news brief or a magazine cover story, asking the right questions in the right way is critical. This involves the use of verbal as well as non-verbal language such as eye contact and the all-important active listening. The essential 5Ws and H (who, what, when, where, why and how), closed questions and open questions are covered in this chapter, which also explores the final three major steps of GRAB5: Ask Questions; Be Attentive – Listen; and 5Ws and H – Check. Questioning techniques have also been divided into three main areas in this chapter: (1) questions to USE; (2) questions to TRY; and (3) questions to AVOID.
