ABSTRACT

From the smallest profile to book-length biographies, feature interviews are generally considered the most enjoyable for interviewers and sources. Of course feature interviews require a lot of effort in terms of research and preparation to produce the ‘colour’ required for these human interest stories. While news concentrates on interviewing for facts and quotes (opinion), this chapter covers the two additional building blocks of feature stories – anecdotes (small stories) and description. This chapter includes helpful hints and examples on how to interview for anecdotes and how to provide description to add colour and interest to the feature. A 17-step checklist has been included in this chapter as a guide for your print feature interviews.
