ABSTRACT

As journalists find themselves covering more diverse situations and events around the world, remote interviewing has rapidly become an alternative to face-to-face interviewing to get that all-important credible source or expert. Whether you are on the phone or online, there are definite advantages and disadvantages to conducting interviews remotely. This chapter covers the pros and cons for phone, email and Zoom interviewing and a host of other technology-enabled connections that have come to replace face-to-face interviews. Checklists are provided in this chapter for the main remote interviewing methods together with the dos and don’ts of interviewing using video and online applications. As it does for any interview, it all comes down to preparation and practice; top tips and techniques are covered in this chapter.
