ABSTRACT

Similar to Chapter 2, an overview pertaining to the academic origins of “defund the police” is provided, examining how the original meaning of the slogan was conceived of as a conceptualization for wide-scale police reform, which also challenged assumptions about resource allocation. Emerging from this discussion, a qualitative analysis of 500 tweets containing the hashtag #DefundThePolice is undertaken. We discovered that four frameworks were found to exist within the Twitter public discourse taking place during the summer of 2020. An in-depth explanation of these frameworks, along with more compare-and-contrast of how public use differs from its academic foundations, is also provided.
