ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the gender revolution in the context of the 2020 Democratic presidential primary and general election. The primary election was unprecedented in both its demographic diversity and the innovative self-presentations of the candidates, particularly those who were feminist and gender nontraditional. The Trump-Pence campaign resisted these innovations, drawing on racialized and misogynistic attacks. Yet the pathbreaking election of Vice President Harris was profound. Additionally, ideologies from the gender revolution have become diffused into people’s everyday lives, as focus group participants of all genders were generally supportive of women running for president. While women participants emphasized voting choices based on gender, men tended to resist this idea and emphasized voting based on the individual merit of candidates.
