ABSTRACT

The authors close out their discussion of meso-level forces impacting the professions by using Chapter 6 to describe and begin to explain the rise of new professions, particularly those pursued through forms of entrepreneurship. Recent research shows entrepreneurship becoming one of the more highly favored career options for new college graduates, and research also shows that pathways toward entrepreneurship can be pursued without the same investment in advanced degrees that are typically needed by the classic professions. The authors examine the growth of university-based entrepreneurial programs and begin to assess how these emergent career options may alter perceptions about expertise and advanced forms of training.
