ABSTRACT

The electoral and political strength of gaullism came, according to many, from the charisma of General de Gaulle. The problem of the charisma of General de Gaulle and of the nature of the gaullist party is thus a problem which cannot be limited to the person of the General and the U.D.R. group. The strong features of gaullism correspond to the weak spots of the left: foreign policy; the political regime; and lastly, prosperity and economic expansion, all of which are attitudes generally associated with the right – in England for example. Most French people, including General de Gaulle, would like to see a united Europe independent of the United States, a third force between East and West. The political system gaullism has founded, the policies it adopts, the personal value of its leaders are all fused in the public’s feeling of general satisfaction or discontent.
