ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the role constraints can play as a stimulus for creativity. It looks at two versions of the extreme constraint context and shows how these conditions effectively provide a very different framework within which creativity can flourish. ‘Frugal’ is a word which means ‘careful with resources’, and in the business world, it is increasingly used to describe an approach to innovation which is simple and sustainable. The ideas of frugal innovation are to simplify products and services to the point where they are good enough to meet widespread needs but not wasteful in terms of excess or unnecessary functions. Frugal conditions force a clear and challenging goal around which teams can focus their problem-solving efforts. Innovation can sometimes be a matter of life and death.
