ABSTRACT

Holy Mother lived in her mortal body for thirty-three years, which may be roughly divided into three periods after her return from Vrindavan. During the first period she lived mostly out of the public gaze, travelling frequently between Calcutta and Kamarpukur and Jayrambati. During the second period she began her spiritual ministry in earnest. It reached its culmination during the third period. At Cossipore Sri Ramakrishna had told his nephew about Sarada Devi’s living permanently at Kamarpukur. Holy Mother led a quiet life at Kamarpukur. Her financial condition was now slightly improved. A little help came from some of the Master’s devotees in Calcutta, and she also received her share of paddy from the family. Thus the fear of starvation was removed. Prior to Swami Vivekananda’s sailing for America on May 31, 1893, he was assailed by doubt as to whether he was undertaking the journey to fulfil God’s will or to satisfy his own personal ambition.
