ABSTRACT
Power is a factor in human relationships. Anthropologists study open displays of power and hidden relationships. Some societies respect all persons and hold goods communally, while others maintain hierarchies of rank and wealth. Changes in climate, invasions, and epidemics may cause customary behavior to fail to fulfill needs; all societies are dynamic in changing to adapt. Anthropologists have studied how a prophet or charismatic leader may arise to guide communities through crises.
