ABSTRACT

The archaeologist points his archaeological trowel, our basic all-purpose excavation tool, to a layer of charcoal and bits of butchered bone in the excavation pit, indicating a corral. Black layer at bottom is from camps on the hillside terrace, the black from many wood fires. Anthropologists work with both government and non-governmental organizations to assist local communities and First Nations to remain independent on their own lands. Anthropologists can link such small nations with global influencers. Family education and entertainment are important to millions. Here, in Cuba, at a marine research station, staff help children learn to know dolphins. These marine mammals are part of our ecosystem along with us humans in the Anthropocene today. Anthropologists join biologists in studying the ecology, and in programs for the public.
