ABSTRACT

This chapter covers instrumental reward conditioning, also known as operant learning and goal-directed learning. The terminology and notion of contingencies of instrumental learning is defined. The basic principles of reward training include response learning (shaping), discriminative conditioning, and effective reinforcer parameters (e.g., delay, schedule drive). Examples range from bar pressing to self-behavior modification behavior. The chapter focuses on the questions: What are the discriminative stimuli that elicit behavior? Is learning better described by habits or knowledge? And what makes a reinforcer reinforce? Applications include modifying habits and self-behavior modification.
