ABSTRACT

Chapter 8 explores the main tasks implied in the three phases of the translation process, i.e. orientation, drafting, and revision. The chapter provides a wide overview of the strategies translators can adopt to read the source text, the target text, and the reference material, and draft and revise their translations, together with terminological and methodological insights for non-expert researchers, trainers, and trainees. In addition, it offers some sample training activities targeting the main pitfalls that emerged in novices’ procedural behaviour and translations in the framework of the empirical investigation described in Section 2. Specifically, the activities aim to: (a) raise awareness about the existence, purpose, and applications of different reading strategies; (b) encourage the selection of suitable sources for specific translation problems, explore the limits and the potential of bilingual and monolingual dictionaries, favour rewording, also to widen personal vocabulary; and (c) show how different revision procedures can serve different purposes, highlight different types of errors, and be performed (synergistically) at different stages of the translation process.
