ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 compares and contrasts the main studies and models describing the acquisition and development of TC (TCA), with special reference to (simulated) longitudinal empirical studies. Despite the different research designs, both empirical and non-empirical studies seem to converge on the dynamic construction of TC, as shown by the models of TCA proposed by Kiraly, PACTE, the projects “TransComp” and “Capturing Translation Processes”, and the longitudinal study by Kumpulainen. Finally, the chapter also accounts for the emergence of a common European framework of reference for translation competence as well as the developmental stages of literary translation competence as identified in the PETRA-E Framework.
