ABSTRACT
In Chapter 9, readers are introduced to another branch of linguistics which is one of the most relevant fields for translators, as well as students and researchers of translation: ‘functional linguistics’. The chapter discusses such areas and notions as ‘register’, ‘cohesion’, ‘attitude’, ‘engagement’, and ‘graduation’. After introducing these linguistic areas and notions, they are discussed with a direct link to translation. After studying this chapter, readers should be able to distinguish ‘ideational meaning’ from the other two types of meaning, distinguish evaluative language from non-evaluative language, and distinguish between ‘grammatical cohesion’ and ‘lexical cohesion’.
