ABSTRACT
In Chapter 10, readers are introduced to several sociolinguistic concepts, including ‘social identity’, ‘social factors’, ‘social dimensions’, ‘code-switching’, ‘convergence’, and ‘divergence’. These concepts are also discussed in a direct link to translation. After studying this chapter, readers should be able to find answers to such sociolinguistic questions as ‘What is sociolinguistics?’, ‘What is social identity?’, ‘What are the main social factors and dimensions that should be taken into account while analysing and translating a text?’, ‘What is code-switching?’, ‘Why do people code-switch?’, ‘What are the main types of code-switching?’, and ‘How do translators deal with texts loaded with examples of code-switching?’.
