ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the structures of words, the classification of morphemes (‘free’ or ‘bound’, ‘lexical’ or ‘grammatical’, ‘inflectional’ or ‘derivational’), the classification of words (‘simple’, ‘compound’, or ‘complex’) and the units that make up words are introduced and exemplified. Then an attempt is made to connect the dots by touching on (1) two types of translation: ‘rank-bound translation’ and ‘unbound translation’ and (2) types of ‘shift’ that may occur through translation. After studying this chapter, readers should be able to differentiate between ‘rank-bound translation’ and ‘unbound translation’.
