ABSTRACT

In Chapter 5, the structure of phrases, clauses, and sentences are studied. This involves the identification of word-level categories (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, etc.) and phrasal categories (noun phrases, verb phrases, adjective phrases, adverb phrases, etc.). Further, transformation processes and constituent tests are discussed in a direct link to translation. After studying this chapter, readers should be able to deal with translating tense, aspect, voice, gender, and the like across languages, and to disambiguate certain structural ambiguity by resorting to constituent analysis.
