ABSTRACT

In Chapter 7, readers are introduced to a branch of linguistics which is one of the most relevant fields for students and researchers of translation: usage-based linguistics. It covers two main related areas, namely ‘discourse analysis’ and ‘pragmatics’. In this chapter, ‘discourse analysis’ is discussed. You are first given a definition along with its relation to pragmatics. Then you will learn about the main approaches to discourse analysis. In this chapter, special attention is paid to two main approaches, namely ‘conversation analysis’ and ‘critical discourse analysis’, which are discussed in a direct relation to translation.
