ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 focuses on the implementation of TOS cycles by teachers in intermediate grades. In this chapter we look into the classrooms of three third grade teachers and a fifth grade teacher. We also get a picture of how a special education and a third grade teacher collaborate on a TOS project. Similar to Chapter 3, this chapter begins with the teachers’ reflections about their own cultural background and how that has impinged on their instructional philosophies. Two of the teachers had Native American as part of their heritage, and each commented that although looking at them they did not stand out in any observable way, their heritages did impact their teaching. The implementation of each TOS component is presented in a way to show the uniquenesses of each teacher's classroom. The chapter ends with a commentary by the authors and questions for reflection.
